Chloroquine phosphate, given orally, is a drug used for the prevention and treatment of uncomplicated cases of malaria, which is caused by species of Plasmodium. In regions where chloroquine-resistant P. falciparum is encountered, mefloquine or doxycycline may be used for prevention of the disease. Primaquine Phosphate is the phosphate salt form of primaquine, a synthetic, 8-aminoquinoline derivative with antimalarial properties. Although its mechanism of action is unclear, primaquine bind to and alter the properties of protozoal DNA. This agent eliminates tissue exo-erythrocytic malarial infection, preventing the development of the erythrocytic forms of the parasite which are responsible for relapses in Plasmodium vivax and ovale malaria. Chloroquine is related in structure to quinine but more potent against Plasmodium falciparum, ovale, malariae and vivax, and better tolerated than quinine. Chloroquine remains the first choice of antimalarial prophylaxis as well as treatment. Chloroquine is available in tablets of 250 and 500 mg in generic forms and under the brand name Aralen.

Hydroxychloroquine is widely used in the treatment of post-Lyme arthritis. Effectively prevents and treats malaria, and treats a certain type of intestinal infection but can cause serious side effects in certain people.

  7. Chloroquine Phosphate. Chloroquine is used to prevent or treat malaria caused by mosquito bites in countries where malaria is common. Malaria parasites can enter the body through these mosquito bites, and then live in body tissues such as red blood cells or the liver.

Chloroquine phosphate has a bitter taste; it is slowly discoloured by light. Chloroquine phosphate may exist in 2 polymorphic forms differing in melting temperature, one of which melts at about 194°C, the other at about 215°C; mixtures of the 2 forms melt between 194°C and 215°C. Chloroquine enters the red blood cell by simple diffusion, inhibiting the parasite cell and digestive vacuole. Chloroquine then becomes protonated to CQ2+, as the digestive vacuole is known to be acidic pH 4.7; chloroquine then cannot leave by diffusion. He went to see a Rheumi and he said it could be Fibro/Lupus or worst case... This has been so stressful for us as the wait for the bloodwork is the worst. The Rheumi put him on 75 mg of Lyrica to treat him for fibro in case that was it but it knocks my husband out so he can't take it. My sister was diagnosed with scleroderma at age 6 and is extremely ill now at 30 she can barely move-my mother was diagnosed with lupus about 4 years ago and my aunt also suffers from lupus.
