    Plaquenil use with retinopathy

Pattern of Retinopathy: Although the locus of toxic damage is parafoveal in many eyes, Asian patients often show an extramacular pattern of damage. Dose: We recommend a maximum daily HCQ use of 5.0 mg/kg real weight, which correlates better with risk than ideal weight.

These data suggest that hydroxychloroquine retinopathy is more common than previously recognized, especially at high daily intake and with long durations of use or in the presence of kidney disease or concurrent tamoxifen therapy. Daily use of 5.0 mg/kg of real body weight or less is associated with a low risk for up to 10 years of use. Use of Plaquenil is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to 4-aminoquinoline compounds. Warnings Resistant strains of malaria Plaquenil is not effective against chloroquine-resistant strains of P. falciparum see CLINICAL PHARMACOLOGY – Microbiology. H ydroxychloroquine HCQ; Plaquenil, Sanofi, Bridgewater, NJ is an antimalarial agent that is also commonly used as a treatment for a variety of rheumatologic and dermatologic conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus. The most common side effect associated with its use is retinal toxicity, which may be irreversible.

Risk of Toxicity: The risk of toxicity is dependent on daily dose and duration of use. There are no similar demographic data for CQ, but dose comparisons in older literature suggest using 2.3 mg/kg real weight.

Many systemic medications may cause retinal toxicity. One such commonly used medication for dermatologic and rheumatologic inflammatory conditions is hydroxychloroquine Plaquenil, a chloroquine derivative. It is used to treat many diseases including malaria, rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus. The risk may be much higher because retinopathy can be detected earlier when using more sensitive screening techniques. OBJECTIVES To reassess the prevalence of and risk factors for hydroxychloroquine retinal toxicity and to determine dosage levels that facilitate safe use of the drug. Plaquenil is also an antirheumatic medicine and is used to treat symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis and discoid or systemic lupus erythematosus. Important information. Taking Plaquenil long-term or at high doses may cause irreversible damage to the retina of your eye.

MS symptoms. Or is it from the Plaquenil, Elavil? Arg! - Lupus There is an incidence of "abnormal nerve conduction" with it. I'm jerking and spasming constantly. It's horrible. I have a pile of other MS symptoms that don't seem to be Plaquenil side effects. The other medication that might be causing all my problems is Elavil Amitriptyline.
