    Getting off hydroxychloroquine

The pharmacist said there wont be any danger just stopping it. Has anyone gone off the plaquenil and what happened? I was put on Plaquenil for RA as I was being dx for lupus. My rhuemy wants me to stop every time I have an infection. Best of luck, Creekbank My mom said she read that plaquenil is mainly used for the discoid lupus and people with the joint pain. Right now my hips are the only thing that is really bothering me my knees are now starting to act up.....

With the Plaquenil I don't think you will find much relief in such a short time on it & at half of a workable dose. I have read about people stopping P & flaring up. Those who stopped it abruptly had real problems similar to what you are experiencing. If you really need to get off it, I would taper down slowly, very slowly. Hydroxychloroquine is a prescription drug. It comes as an oral tablet. Hydroxychloroquine is available as the brand-name drug Plaquenil. It’s also available in a generic version. May 07, 2012 Saturday was a week since I stopped taking Plaquenil, aka Hydroxychloroquine, per my doctor's instructions, and I think I am going through some form of withdrawal. I took the drug as a treatment for sarcoidosis and one of the side effects is a reduction in white blood cells, which is what has happened to me.

There is no taper needed or withdrawal, but if it has been helping you, you may have increased symptoms by the time you go for your next appointment. If so, you would likely be able to get a prescription from that doctor for one month's supply to tide you over. I have only taken it once, so I am not sure what the results will be. I stopped mine and went into a life threatening flare - I would call your PCP to get a refill You may be fine or not- depends on if your illness has been lurking in the background waiting for an opportunity to launch an attack Louters, I went to see a new rheum and he took me off the Plaquenil to see what symptoms would show. I agree with poobie and would call your pcp to get a refill if possible.

  7. The only drug I take is hydroxychloroquine. Originally I was on 400mg daily, then 300mg and from Easter this year down to 200mg. Now reducing to 100mg actually 200mg every other day as HCQ only comes in 200mg tabs. If all goes well then I plan to come off HCQ completely in 4-6 months time.

You can also put off joint damage, and in some cases, you can do more than just slow it down. Being able to stop joint damage can lessen pain and mean a better quality of life. Hydroxychloroquine is one of the medications that can be a valuable part of your treatment plan. Hydroxychloroquine Plaquenil is considered a disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drug DMARD. It can decrease the pain and swelling of arthritis. It may prevent joint damage and reduce the risk of long-term disability. Hydroxychloroquine is in a class of medications that was first used to prevent and treat malaria. Accidental exposure may cause death. If a child takes hydroxychloroquine by accident, get medical help right away. Use with care in children. Talk with the doctor. If you are 65 or older, use hydroxychloroquine with care. You could have more side effects. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan on getting pregnant, or are breast-feeding.
